Charlotte Hornets (0-0) Boston Celtics (0-0) Preseason Game #1 10/2/22

This is the first pre-season game for both teams. Celtics He won the series 3-1 last season. These two teams met 116 times in the regular season with Boston leading the series 71-45. Celtics 4-1 in the last 5 meetings. Charlotte won 43 games last season and finished 10th in a row while the Celtics won 51 games and finished second in the East.

I suspect the Celtics will start Grant Williams in place of Robert Williams, but they might get small, or if Blake Griffin is with the team, they might start him in center while they wait for Timlord and Cornette to return to the connecting line. The Hornets will likely start the same squad they started last year except to replace Miles Bridges with PJ Washington. Of course, both teams can go in a very different direction because this is pre-season and coaches often experiment with formations.

Both teams had some off-season chaos. The Hornets released James Borrego after 4 years as their head coach. They agreed to an agreement with Kenny Atkinson to take over as head coach but Atkinson backed out of the deal a few days later. The Hornets then brought back Steve Clifford, who coached the team from 2013 to 2018.

The Hornets’ free restricted agent Miles Bridges has been awarded a qualifying offer by them. Bridges is a talented player who averaged 20.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists last season. However, he was arrested in June and charged with one felony count of injuring the father of a child and two felony counts of child abuse. His future in the NBA is still in question as he awaits his trial date.

The Hornets have mostly stayed the same as last year but without the aforementioned bridges. They re-signed Cody Martin and also signed Dennis Smith Jr. to an unsecured camp contract. They are hoping for a healthy Gordon Hayward, who has struggled to stay healthy for the past few years and played in just 49 games last season.

We know all too well the problems of the Celtics coming into camp. Head coach Emi Odoka was suspended for the entire season a week before camp began for violating several team rules. Although some details have been leaked, the whole story is largely unknown. Joe Matsula took over as interim head coach who was an assistant under Odoka and was also a finalist for head coach at Utah State.

The Celtics also lost to Danilo Gallinari this season when he tore up the AFC Champions League while playing for the Italian national team. Robert Williams will miss 8 to 12 weeks after having the same knee surgery that he surgically repaired last season. Luke Kornet injured his ankle during training and will miss 1-2 weeks. For the Hornets, Cody Martin is out after injuring his knee in practice and Miles Bridges is out while he waits for his court date.

Main matches

Jaylen Brown vs Terry Roser
Former Celtic Terry Roser always takes games against the Celtics very seriously and approaches them with a chip on his shoulder. Last season, he averaged 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 44.4% from the field and 37.4% from outside the arc. We expect to see Jaylen Brown take another step forward in his development this season which begins with this match.

Marcus Smart vs. Lamelo Bull
The player of the previous year, LaMelo Ball, played very well last season. He averaged 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 42.9% from the field and 38.9% from outside the arc. Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart will do his best to slow the ball down in this game.

Jason Tatum vs Gordon Hayward
Since breaking his ankle in his first season with the Celtics, Gordon Hayward has struggled to stay healthy. He came to camp in good health and hopes to be able to stay on the field this season. He played in just 49 games last season, averaging 15.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He shot 45.9% from the field and 39.1% from outside the arc. If he can stay healthy, he can be a difference maker for the Hornets. The Celtics expect Jayson Tatum to improve this season and that should make this game an enjoyable one to watch.

game keys
defense Defense is always the key to winning matches. The Celtics were the top defensive team last season and they have players to be an outstanding defensive team this season as well. The Hornets finished 28th in points allowed in the race last season but Steve Clifford has vowed to change that this season. The Celtics need to pick up where they left off and play with a strong team and individual defense.

recovery – Second for defense is recoil. Lots of recoil is effort and hustle. The Celtics need to smash the boards as a team and fight for every bounce. The Celtics must defeat the Hornets for the Bounces to give themselves additional possessions and to keep the Hornets from getting the same.

be aggressive The Celtics have to work hard through the advice and pledge that the teams will not give up. The Celtics have a lot of talent, but talent without effort won’t win games. The Celtics should be more aggressive on the boards, in defense, when going for loose balls and they should be aggressive going into the basket. They can’t let the Hornets play harder than them.

take care of the ball In pre-season we often see teams making a lot of shifts because of trying to solve problems and getting used to playing with each other. Last season, the Celtics often turned the ball around a lot. They have to work to limit these shifts this season. If the Celtics can take care of the ball and limit spins, they have a good chance of winning in this game.

Pre-season It’s the first game of pre-season and both teams are still working on line-ups, chemistry and conditioning. We may see limited starter minutes as well as some creative formations as both coaches look to evaluate the camp players. Basketball may not be very beautiful.

home match This is a home game and fans will be excited to see their Celtics for the first time this season. The Celtics should get a boost from the local fans and hopefully they’ll take protecting their stadium seriously from the start.
