Hughes Birds last two holes to catch Dieter in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss (AP) – Mackenzie Hughes thought he had a chance of being selected for the Presidents Cup because of his status. The strength of his game helped carry him to 9-under 63 on Friday and a share of the championship lead at Sanderson Farms.

Hughes broke his last two holes at the Country Club of Jackson to catch Belgium’s Thomas Detre, who played in the morning and took 67 seconds straight.

They were 10 under 134, one shot ahead of Sepp Straka (66).

Hughes finished last year at 39th in the world, but the Canadian has slipped enough this year that he needed to count on selecting a captain for the President’s Cup games in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Hughes now lives.
