Thank God! Mercury is finally retrograde

After nearly a month of messy communication incidents, travel problems, and never ending anxiety, Mercury retrograde is finally over. On October 2, Planet of Communication will stop its back dance and switch straight to Virgo – but that doesn’t mean the show is over.

Narayana Montevar, chief astrologer for Astrology.com and author of Moon Signs: Unleash Your Luminous Inner StrengthShe says so frankly: “A direct transformation of Mercury is not going to be easy,” she tells Refinery29. In general, Mercury’s “stations”—when they go either retrograde or straight—are peak moments when it comes to technology and communications that behave strangely. Even though we’re (more than) ready to kiss Mercury’s farewell retrograde, there are still some ups and downs we must endure before its final arc.

“Instead of clarity, this Mercury station will bring a double amount of confusion because the planet of communication will form an opposition with Neptune, the planet of illusion, as direct,” Montefar explains. “This is a connection that only happens once a year, and in 2022, it coincides with the end of Mercury’s retrograde.” This planetary aspect can make us paranoid and lead to drama, but it isn’t All Bad (we promise). This energy can also give us moments of incredible creativity, Montefar points out. Remember, sometimes the most beautiful creations can come from the most difficult moments – at least, that’s what we will tell ourselves.

However, there is still room to make this astrological event the positive and forward-thinking we need this month. The direct rotation of Mercury is an ideal time to think about your goals before taking action, says Nebula app astrologer Eva Naskova. “Don’t be in a hurry, step yourself,” she says. “Instead, allow your mind to process what was going on during Mercury’s retrograde period and use your past mistakes and lessons as a starting point in your lead.” Slow and steady always wins the race, anyway. You could say that this is the beginning of the retrograde arc.

Look for October 10, when Mercury reverses its steps and returns to Libra, a sign that it has begun its retrograde motion. “At this time, we will be reassessing relationships and the way we communicate with each other,” Lisa Stardust, astrologer and author love surface. Finding diplomacy in communication is pivotal. All Libra wants is things to be in harmony, and after some major upheaval has occurred during the Decline of the Communication Planet, we need a little consistency. Connect with friends you might have mistakenly despised or co-workers you might have missed an email from to make up and get the connection back on track – let’s put this planetary dance behind us once and for all, shall we?

Libra rules marriages and partnerships, and according to psychological astrologer Leslie Hill, we will all feel more comfortable, focused on relationships, and willing to compromise to find common ground when Mercury enters the sign of scales. “This would be a huge shift from the unsettling Virgo energy we’ve been experiencing for the past several weeks,” she says.

Then on October 12, Mercury in Libra will oppose Jupiter in Aries. “This is an overly optimistic and enthusiastic energy that can make us make bold statements,” says astronomer Stephanie Campos. “It’s easy to over-commit and nibble on more than we can chew.” Mercury is opposed to Jupiter on both September 2 and September 18, so think about the conversations you were having during those dates. “That’s the big conclusion to those conversations – you’re ready to move on,” she says. It’s time to ask yourself, what, if anything, did you learn? How has your view changed or evolved? Your answers may help clear some of the fog from this past regression.

Stardust warns that while this opposition will broaden our minds, communication can feel some dissonance. Don’t be afraid to make compromises that aren’t in your favour, or if they’re too many, to put off a decision if things feel like things are going right – the only thing worse than making a mistake is knowing you could have prevented it, after all.

Although Mercury’s direct motion is not as rocky and strict as its retrograde, we will still feel the tingling of the planet’s motion. But, fear not – we’ve done it twice already this year, and it’s not something we’ve dealt with before. good luck!
