According to a survey conducted by Deloitte, 73% of respondents said their organizations have invested in intelligent automation, a significant jump from 58% in 2019. Automation, including robotic process automation (RPA), can help businesses by streamlining workflows, making organizations more profitable and resilient and response. RPA also increases employee satisfaction, engagement, and productivity by removing regular tasks from their workdays. With this new growth of RPA technology, many organizations need RPA developers to build automation while scaling their automation journeys.

RPA developers work cross-functionally with business process personnel and business analysts to create and improve workflow processes. These developers deploy RPA software bots that can understand what’s on the screen, complete the correct keystrokes, navigate systems, select and extract data, and perform a wide variety of specific actions. However, these digital virtual assistants can do this faster and more consistently than people can, giving employees more time in their day to focus on important tasks. RPA developers are quickly becoming an essential part of IT and business process teams as companies implement RPA technologies.

RPA attracts new talent

Since RPA technology is not scalable and can be implemented quickly to accelerate digital transformation at the company level, there has been a rapid growth in the use of RPA around the world. Not only does RPA help companies save money, it also reduces manual errors and improves compliance. RPA developers themselves also see a great future in technology. According to the 2022 UiPath Survey of the State of RPA Developer, the vast majority (91%) of RPA developers expect their organization to hire more developers in the next twelve months. More specifically, 56% said their organization would “definitely” hire more RPA developers, up from 42% last year, and another 35% believed it was “likely” that their organization would hire.

With this recent hiring spree, there are also more RPA talents available now than ever before. UiPath found that three out of five developers have moved into RPA from other roles, often from careers in software development. Additionally, three out of four RPA developers believe they will be in RPA automation for at least the next five years. RPA developers are also more likely to report being “highly satisfied” with all aspects of their work. RPA developers are not only satisfied, but also proud of the work they do: 90% believe RPA will have a positive impact on society, up from 87% last year. Because RPA technology promotes a unique way of thinking through common business problems, developers of this technology tend to be very optimistic about the impact of their chosen profession.

Robotic process automation develops with the help of students

Like all industries, the current state of automated process automation is evolving and will continue to grow as the next generation enters the workforce. By surveying talent among college students, UiPath discovered that nearly half of the responding students are female, compared to just 25% of current RPA developers.. RPA has the potential to become a more diverse and accessible field that encourages the participation of women and under-represented communities.. Of all college students surveyed, 72% are considering a job in RPA technology development after graduation. Of those, more than half (56%) are considering jobs as RPA developers. Other roles of interest to students include Software Testing/Quality Assurance Engineer (32%), RPA Project Manager (31%), and Business Analyst (28%).

Current students express interest in RPA because they believe:

  • It’s an interesting technique,
    • easy to learn and
    • The salaries are competitive.

Students are also very interested in first-hand experience. Seventy-seven percent are interested in training to hone their skills, and 17 percent have either completed or are working in an internship position. Those who are hired for RPA positions should consider how internships can be used to train and hire the next generation of RPA developers.

Where do things go from here?

While RPA developers are optimistic, they also recognize that automated process automation is an evolving space. Businesses can expect RPA to grow in importance and power when combined with AI, ML, and low- or no-code tools. The automation space has already changed rapidly in the past five years and will continue to evolve as more companies take advantage of RPA technology. Investment in RPA is growing exponentially, and business sectors are becoming more diversified, expanding to include industries such as energy, transportation, insurance, education, and the public sector. Democratizing RPA is just as important as implementing it, which means simplifying other processes with low- or no-code tools and focusing on citizen developers.
